Saints of Bengal

Saints of Bengal: In Bengal, Chaitanya popularized Bhakti and composed hymns in praise of lord Krishna. Surdas was another Bhakti devotee who wrote songs of devotion for lord Krishna. Sursagar is his famous book consisting of his devotional songs. Mirabia, a Rajput princess, was also a great devotee of Krishna. Vallabhachary built a temple for lord Krishna on Govardhan hill near Mathura. He came from Telugu Brahmin family.

Chaitanya (1485-1534): Chaitanya was the greatest saint of the Bhakti movement. Born at Navadwip in Bengal, his original name was Vishwambhar Mishra. He was responsible for the popularity of Vaishnavism in Bengal through his Kirtans. He began the Achintayabhedabhedavada School of theology.

 Chaitanya was  adored Krishna and Radha and attempted to spiritualise their lives in Vrindavan. He settled permanently at Puri where he died. After his death, his followers systematised his teachings and organised themselves into a sect called Gaudiya Vaishanavism. Krishnadasa Kaviraja wrote his biography, Chaitanyacharitamrita.
